(The Nevados de Huaytapallana ((White Mountain of Snow and Ice))

Dedicated to: Little Daniel (from Huancayo); Sonia and Katee (from Huaytapallana)

Nevados de Huaytapallana (Whita-Payana)

Remote, the roads, lakes and valleys:

Eden’s icy, and chilled abode

(Happy are the eyes and souls that see!)

Where beauty merges: the Nevados de Huaytapallana.

From domes of icy mountain tops, gleam’st like a star

Three miles high, with mist and dusk are flown:

And valleys below, darken black by winds

And shadows, opal-stoned roads—:

Delicate and bright—Huaytapallana

Marvel the eye, makes a gem’s unrest.

As one looks upon its summit (White-Mountain)

Standing by it’s dreamy laguna: thy

Wings shine so radiant, thy mystic grace…!

It is hard for my human heart to find

The vision in my mind: farewell, farewell—!

Notes by the author: I have gone over this poem several times now: half written on the roads through the mountains, up to White Mountain (also called: Huaytapallana), the other half written while standing by the lake by White Mountain, with its icy and snow covered summit, looking up at its towering beauty, and the surrounding mountains, and now I have found I must cut half of the poem out in order to capture its tireless beauty. I was going to add that: it is more beautiful than the Sacred Valley of Peru, and more bold than Machu Picchu, etc.

On the plateau which leads directly down to the lake that looks up to White Mountain is a rustic Guest House of sorts, where for a few nights you can stay, for $3.00 a night, and buy a coke and crackers if you wish. Not much more. And there I met the two young girls, Sonia and Katee, most kind again, whom this poem is dedicated to (who’s family owns the location, and they seem to take care of it when needed), along with Daniel, my wife’s nephew, the youngest member of us six individuals who made the trip through the winding and rough roads of the Nevados of this region of Peru, which is nearby Huancayo. And during my trip through the mountains, on my way back we (my wife Rosa, and some of her family members: sisters, brother-in-law, and nephew) stopped at a small village and had a fish fry; again as usual, the people were very warm towards us (Acopalca).

#906 10/28/2005, Height of White Mountain, 5768-meters or about 14,763-feet; but by the lake, where I was, it was only 13, 500-feet.

Spanish Version
Translated by Nancy Peñaloza

No mucho.
